Gold for Truagh in Limerick:

Athletes from the parish of Truagh scored gold, not once, not twice but four times at the national Special Olympics finals in Limerick last weekend. This was a massive achievement for the athletes and their families and was duly celebrated throughout the parish on Tuesday evening on their return. Indeed thanks to limo transport from Peter McMahon the athletes were given an escorted tour of Truagh and Emyvale, concluding with a special celebration at Errigal Truagh Special Needs Centre.

The first gold medal of last weekend went to Finbar McKenna in the freestyle swimming event. Finbar went on to win a second gold on the Team Ulster relay team, and picked up a ribbon in the backstroke event. Finbar was joined in the winning Team Ulster relay swim by Paul McKenna. Paul also got a bronze medal for his freestyle swim. Both swimmers attend Drumlin House and the staff and mentors at Drumlin House are to be warmly congratulated on this wonderful achievement.

Kevin Owens, from Killybreen was keen not to be outdone by his neighbours and strolled home to victory in the walking race. This victory adds to his Ulster title last year.  Finally, Patrick McKenna, Dernalosset gave a wonderful performance to pick up the fourth place ribbon in the Tennis Ball Throw. Both athletes are service users with Errigal Truagh Special Needs Centre. Again staff members and coach, Anne McKenna are to be warmly congratulated on their achievements.
