Bishop Liam McDaid RIP:
It was with great sadness that we learned of the death of Bishop Liam yesterday. I first met
Liam in 1958 as students in St. Macartan’s College and we have been close friends all through
the years since then. We were together for three years in Maynooth College. While in the Sem
as students and again in Maynooth we always seemed to be on the same football team - he as
full back and myself in goals. We were members of staff in St. Macartan’s and he later became
the Principal. While in St. Macartan’s he joined Ann and I in running a 12 week ‘Teenage
Encounter’ in our home for 16 local youth. He endeared himself to all and our friendship
deepened. He came to our home twice a week during the course - one night to prepare for the
course and then the presentation night when the youth attended. Each week we enjoyed his
company and cherished his comradeship. We were delighted to be present as his quests when
he was ordained Bishop in the Cathedral and afterwards at the reception and again at his
retirement. We were sorry for him when illness cut short his time as Bishop and made his life
more difficult but glad that he had good friends who looked after him. We offer our sincere
condolence to his brother Christopher and his many close friends and helpers. May he rest in
peace.
