Science Day 2019 in Deravoy NS.
One event that I try not to miss each year is the Science Day in Deravoy National School and 2019 was another excellent and amazing day at the school. The theme this year was ‘The Farm’ and it looks like every pupil submitted a make-up of a farm scene based on the one at home if they live on a farm. The quality of the constructions and the ingenuity in the use of materials was mind-boggling - they were so true to life and every form of farm animal was represented. Live hens and a huge rooster came along to show off their plumages and seemed quite content among the hustle and bustle in the Community Centre. There can be no doubt that some of those pupils involved will take up farming at least as a partime occupation and some of them have already established themselves as keen farmers and have learned the trade and animal welfare. But the ‘farms’ were only part of the day - all around the Centre groups of pupils were demonstrating a host of scientific facts and experiments. They had the proof and the equipment to show the proof of their assertions and indeed were annoyed if one were not willing to watch the experiment and then listen to the explanation. They were all well versed in what they were demonstrating and were extremely capable of giving the explanation. It was also wonderful to see the parents, grandparents and family members enjoying the experience and they were justly proud of the children. Some, due to work commitments, were unable to be there but all had an input somewhere along the line. We must also compliment the staff of the school who obviously brought out the talents and developed the confidence on display from the pupils. Well done to all involved.
Congratulations to the scvhool debating team above who had an extremely successful year. There were five debates and a lot of research and collaboration and working together as a team in preparation for each debate. They won their way to the final. The decision at the end was very close and Deravoy finished in second place in the county.
