Canada Day in Monaghan 2019: Canada day in Monaghan was a little more subdued this year in comparison to the previous three events. There were a number of factors contributing to this but nonetheless the official part went ahead as did the Air Canada competition. The Day was celebrated on Saturday June 29th instead of the official date of July 1st and began with a presentation to Monaghan Library of a books on Canada and these were presented by Blaithín. There will be more on this at a later date as it is important to involve the young people with our connection and letting them learn about the country is a good start. The singing of the National Anthems and the raising of the flags of the two countries took place at the Courthouse while in Rossmore Park the Monaghan Fittest Company was being decided. The winner of the competition being run by Air Canada, Mark Clifford of O’Hanrahan Travel and supported by Northern Sound radio was announced and the winner was Best Berry from Glaslough. He is originally from Canada but has been adopted by Monaghan but was delighted with his Free tickets to pay a visit to Canada and take in the Niagara Falls. We wish him, and his partner, a pleasant journey and a very enjoyable time. On the Courthouse forecourt there were a number of activities including a Mobile Fun Animal farm and this drew plenty of attention. Later in the afternoon there was a big crowd and plenty of excitement as Blasta Street Kitchen broke the world record for longest line of tacos I am told they achieved 2,117. From emyvale.net we send Canada Day greetings to all the friends we have established there, especially in PEI, and we look forward to their next visit.
Yes! That’s a real snake Dáire has on his knee and that’s brave.
