Christmas Day Swim 2011
Christmas Day Swim 2011 was another success with over 50 swimmers and a couple of
hundred spectators to cheer them on. It was a great social event as those home on
holiday met with friends and neighbours and all exchanged seasonal greetings. The
weather was about 30 degrees higher than last year and the plunge was easier than
recent years but it was the courageous who rushed in on the signal. Mark Leslie,
who had his swim in the Dublin 40 ft earlier arrived and then proceeded to swim to
the Island and back again. Castle Leslie supplied hot soup for all and hopefully
the sponsorship will help the organising Committee to continue their great work for
those with mental disability. Thanks to all who assisted with the event in so many
different ways and it was fantastic to see Tommy Bowe there too. Thanks for being
there Tommy.
There was also a sadness as this event has been driven and managed by
the late Dan Rogan for many years. His recent death was a great loss to the community
and to the committee but Christmas day was a day to celebrate the great work which
Dan had participated in and the leadership he displayed in his efforts to improve
the conditions for those with disabilities. His unassuming and modest character made
it impossible to refuse any request from him and he never gave up on any project
he was involved in. To mark that lifetime of service to the community in many forms
a tree was planted at Emy Lake on Christmas Day by the Rogan family. Paul, Donal
and Ann and two grandchildren were present to perform the official duties. Of course
Dan’s son, Justin, who passed away one week after Dan was also remembered as he was
dedicated to community as well. We are confident that both were watching over us
today and helped to get us clement weather for the occasion.
