UlsterGAAWriters Annual Awards 2011
The Ulster GAA Writers Association held its annual Awards Night in the Great Northern
Hotel, Bundoran, on Friday, November 18th. This is a great gathering of top GAA players
and officials and is always well attended. There are twelve awards presented on the
night and these are decided upon by the members of the Association. Monaghan had
a big interest in the awards again this year. Last year Seamus McCluskey was presented
with the Services to the GAA award which is named after Monaghan’s great photographer
and GAA supporter, the late John McAviney. Siobhan McQuillan, Monaghan County PRO,
was presented with the Communications Award due to the great work she did in promoting
her county and the GAA generally. This year Sharon Courtney and Therese McNally along
with Cavan’s Aisling Doonan, were nominated for Ladies Footballer of the Year and
the honour went to Therese. This has been a wonderful year for Therese as she won
the Irish News Ladies Footballer, was selected as an All-Star and her talent has
been recognised by the GAA Writers. Truagh’s Caoimhe Mohan was also nominated in
the Young Achievers Award category. This category takes all aspects of the GAA into
consideration and to have been selected as one of the three is a major honour for
her and for Ladies Football in general. Well done to all our representatives then
for keeping the Monaghan flag flying jn Ulster GAA affairs and congratulations to
Therese on her achievement.
