2011 Weather

Winter has certainly arrived with a big dip in temperatures these last few days and today, Monday October 17th, going down to 4degrees with snow and sleet falling thickly in parts of Northern Ireland. This afternoon there was a storm in this area and it blew down trees and the rain was extremely heavy for well over an hour. The trees were not uprooted but broken through the trunk and these seemed to be solid and healthy trees. One of them blocked the Main N2 at the Bridge but according to my reporter locals soon moved it out of the way and traffic resumed their journey We have a couple of photos of the flooding and of one of the trees. The Winter storms are with us and Monday October 24th was another day to remember as the rain was continuous and heavy causing severe flooding in many areas. Monaghan town was completely cut off and most roads saw deep floods. In some places drivers still tried to get through and damaged their engines as a result of taking on the water. Two deaths in Ireland as a result of the flooding and that puts the conditions into perspective. There are also stories of good Samaritans who helped neighbours and ignored the rain and wet to try to save property and perhaps lives.
The consequences of the flooding will be severe for those whose houses were flooded and insurance will be going up again as a result of the claims. As well many roads have suffered and will need repairs. What else has winter in store for us?
Below we have photos from both days and some great night shots from Keith Murphy and day time pics from Declan McMahon
