Truagh V Ballybay in 2011 Championship

Truagh and Ballybay met in the Senior Championship 2011 in Clontibret on Sunday, August 14th as the second game in a double bill after the Harps V Inniskeen game. This was a poor game and especially for the Truagh supporters as their players never seemed to get into the game and try as they did nothing seemed to go right. Too often they overplayed the ball and lost possession, too often they kicked high balls forward with seeming abandon, too often they gave poor passes or played the wrong option, and too often they failed to convert chances into scores. It was tough football and conditions were tough with heavy rain at the beginning of the second half but the evening belonged to Ballybay who showed great determination throughout and ended with 0 - 12 to Truagh’s 0 - 3.
The referee for this game was Pat McEneaney and I must comment - it is clear that when a good referee is in charge, as he was without being ostentatious, the game seems more like football. Either rules will have to change, or referees will have to apply existing rules more strictly, if a serious injury is to be avoided in some of our games. A player who has to suffer heavy tackling without the protection of the rules will either sustain an injury or, because of his frustration, go out to get revenge, which will end badly for someone.
