U 14 Girls: Blaze 19pts Donagh 27pts

The second game of the day saw the younger Donagh girl’s teams take centre stage and on court first were Lynda Mc Meel, Saoirse Treanor, Rachel Gallagher, Natasha Hughes and Kathleen Connolly. The girls got off to a great start by playing strong aggressive defence. This was particularly noted with outstanding performances by Natasha, Kathleen and Rachel. This tight defence lead too many steals of the ball from the Letterkenny team allowing Natasha and Kathleen to do some great fast breaks down the court. Natasha was first to score, followed not long after by Kathleen. A rebounding shot from both Saoirse and Lynda saw the score at the end of the first quarter 8pts to 0pts to Donagh.

Out next were Ella Moran, Stephanie Lynch, Ellen Molloy, Cara Mc Kenna and Celine Nally. In this second quarter Blaze No 14 player A. Nee put pressure on the Donagh squad by scoring 2 fine outside shots in the first few minutes. However these were the only baskets she was allowed to get in this quarter as Ella Moran’s exceptional defence did not allow her to convert any more outside shots. Celine Nally was the first of the Donagh squad to add a score in this quarter and continued to have many attempts at driving to the basket, where she was fouled and allowed a number of free shots. Unfortunately these were not converted to scores. Cara having just joined the squad this year showed another fine performance and we are sure we will see a lot more from this girl as the season progresses.  Ellen Molloy and Stephanie Lynch worked well in defence and in rebounds. Ellen Mulligan returning from an injury was subbed in for the last 2 minutes of this quarter and she added another 3 pts to the score with 1pt from a free shot. Score here 12 to 7.

The next two quarters saw much of the same type of play by both teams.  Donagh continued to lead for the remainder of the game although Blaze fought well throughout the game and kept the score difference to within 5 pts for much of the third and fourth quarter. Overall a great performance by these girls and some great improvements can be seen in their play which hopefully if this marked improvement continues should see these girls gain a place in the top four of the league and certainly a crack at the finals!
