Swan Rescue.

When Hollands, General Merchants, Emyvale, opened their premises on Monday morning, October 3rd they discovered a young swan in the yard in some distress. They contacted authorities to come to the rescue and Peadar Morgan was contacted and went to the scene. While waiting his arrival the swan seemed to grow accustomed to its surroundings and began walking about, staking a claim to the territory. It now allowed humans get closer but not too close or the hissing warnings were sounded. Within minutes of his arrival Peadar, with the assistance of local man, Seamus McMeel, had the cygnet, (proper term for a young swan), under control and loaded into Peadar’s jeep. The cygnet was then taken to Peter’s Lake in Monaghan and released there and immediately went on a tour round the lake surveying the surroundings. It is possible that the cygnet was born on Emy Lake or the Back Lough. It is not known how it ended up in Hollands Yard but Peadar decided to take it to Monaghan because, as he explained to me, around October each year the parents of cygnets insist that they find a new lake to take up abode and if they do not leave or come back to the lake of their birth the parents are known to beat them severely with their wings and in some cases kill them.
