Community Rejoices with Pat
Pat Treanor, Doogary, Tydavnet, is celebrating his 100th birthday and is in great
form both physically and mentally to do so. On Sunday, January 29th the Tydavnet
community decided to have a little celebration to mark the occasion. A general invite
went out for people to go to the Tydavnet Community Centre after 10am Mass and Pat
was invited to come along. He arrived to a packed Hall of well-wishers and passed
through them to the top table, where he cut the cake and had photos taken with his
family members who were present. Grandson, Brian McKenna, welcomed all and thanked
them for attending. He spoke of Pat and congratulated him on reaching the century.
He gave a brief sketch of his life and how he had lived through so many changes but
was easily able to move with the times and was now sending texts. Tea, traybakes,
sandwiches, sweet buns and cake were served to all and the hum of chat filled the
air. It was a wonderful community occasion and the spirit of the community was so
evident as so many attended and so many were content to stay chatting to friends
and neighbours. Well done to all involved and I add my congratulations to Pat and
wish him many more years of health and happiness.
Some scribe had posted a poem and
picture of Pat which caught my eye and I quote the poem here:
The Centenarians Tale.
The
horse and mare live 30 years
And do not know of wines and beers.
The goats and sheep
at 20 die
And never taste the Scotch or rye.
The cow drinks water by the ton
At 15 its
life is almost done.
The dog at 14 years packs in
Without the aid of rum or gin.
The
modest, sober, bone-dry hen
Lays eggs for years and dies at 10.
But sinful, ginful
rum-soaked men
Survive till three score years and ten.
With spring-well water the few
and mighty
Are still going strong when they are 90
And then there are those who love
their tea
And they live for a century.

On Right - What is she saying to Peter?
On Left: Happy Birthday to Breige.

I did not get everyone into the picture as there were just so many present but this gives you an idea of the crowd.
Brian also remembered Pat’s nephew, Eugene, who died so suddenly last week. I would like to pass on our sympathies to Gene’s family members on this very sad occasion for them. Indeed the huge numbers who attended at the house and at the funeral Mass indicate the high regard and affection that existed for Gene over a very wide area. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam naofa.
