Temperance Sunday – Confirmation Pledge
The Priest addresses the congregation in these or similar words:
There are many situations in life where we require the courage to say “No”. Today we pray for that courage and ask God for all the guidance and strength we need in the course of our lives. As our young people make their “Confirmation Pledge” we are asked to consider carefully what they are undertaking: a promise not to drink alcoholic drink until they are 18years of age or until they make another decision with the approval of their parents about this matter.
Ceremony of Commitment
The Priest addresses those who wish to take the pledge:
Do you promise, with the help of God and the support of your family and friends, not to use alcoholic drink until you reach the age you have agreed with your parents or guardian, and at that stage to make another, more mature, decision concerning your use of alcohol?
Response: Yes, I do.
The Priest addresses parents, guardians, families and friends:
Are you prepared to support and encourage these young people in the commitment they have made today by your example and prayers.
Response: We are.
The Priest invites boys and girls to make their pledge:
Lord God, for love of you and out of concern for my family, my friends and my future happiness, I promise not to take alcoholic drink until I have reached the age that I have agreed with my parents. At that time, with God’s help and with the approval of my parents, I will make another more mature decision concerning my use of alcohol.
Prayer and Blessing:
Let us pray:
Father, you know us better than we know ourselves; you know our struggles and our weakness. In your compassion bless the boys and girls who make their Confirmation Pledge today, through Christ our Lord.
