House Fire

The peace of Mullan Village was disturbed during the early hours of Saturday July 10th when a fire in a local house was reported to the authorities. The Fire Brigade was summoned but it was too late for them to save the building, which was burned out completely. The owner is reported to have been elsewhere when the fire started and the authorities are satisfied that there is nothing suspicious about the fire. However it is the dwelling home of a local person and has a great history behind it. We sympathise with him in his loss.

End of an era –

The closure of the shop affectionately known as “Frandy’s” in Killylough, Tydavnet brings to an end its long association with family shopping in this North Monaghan area. Located by the roadside on the Tydavnet to Clogher road, Frandy’s long history goes back to at least 1911 when 39 year old James TRAINOR was listed as “shopkeeper” in the Census of Ireland. His family recorded in that census included his wife Bridget Trainor aged 29 and one year old Mary Catherine Trainor. Over the years before the advent of supermarkets and family motorcars, Frandy’s supplied all types of groceries, hardware, fuels, stamps, veterinary products, infra-red lamps, loose biscuits, can sweets, penny cakes, meal, wellies, “hairy neds”, penny drinks, “Patsy Pops”, paint, tobacco products and snuff, as well as trading eggs and the annual harvest of wild blackberries picked around the local ditches to raise much needed money.  Over many years the Treanor family continued their long association with providing for the local community, and Packie and his sister Marcella were much loved by everyone. Packie also provided a very reliable transport service to town on Tuesday and Friday, as well as taking local passengers to First Mass in Scotstown. In more recent times Owen McKenna became shopkeeper, and when he retired from the business the store was taken over by Seamus and Peggy McElwain, Killymarron, Ballinode. The locals recently enjoyed the efficiency and varied stock range of Martin, Kieran and Lorna Sherry, but a downturn in the economy, tough competition and greater access to multinationals and chain stores forced them to leave the business. The convenience, quaintness, variety, personal service and banter that the shop is synonymous with, will never be replaced. We thank the Sherry Family for their input into the life of the Killylough community, and we wish them all the best for the future.
