The Late Brendan McCann R.I.P.

Our deepest sympathy goes to Brendan’s wife, Patricia, nee McCooey; his brothers - Declan, Peadar, Ciaran, Enda, Jarlath, and Fintan; to his sisters - Dympna, Eilish, Carmel, Colette and Siobhan; brothers-in-law; sisters-in-law; father-in-law; aunt and uncle; nephews and nieces; cousins; relatives and very wide circle of friends.
Brendan was ill for a short period prior to his death, which was on Wednesday, Feb 18th in Cavan Hospital. He reposed at the home of his sister-in-law, Eileen McMahon, Smithboro. His funeral and Requiem Mass took place in St. Macartan’s Cathedral, Monaghan, on Saturday 21st. Celebrant was Fr. Paddy McGinn. Interment was in Latlurcan cemetery, Monaghan, after Mass. Guards-of-Honour were provided by various groups including Monaghan Harps GFC; St. Patrick’s GFC, Donaghmore; and Glaslough Musical Society.
Brendan was originally from Donaghmore, Co. Tyrone.
In 1978 he married Patricia and they lived in Dungannon, then Glaslough and finally settled in Monaghan town. Despite his years outside of the county he never lost his total commitment and support of his home County Tyrone and for him it was a life-time dream come through when they won the Sam for the first time in 2003. He was just as proud on each of the two succeeding wins. Wherever a Tyrone team was playing, there was Brendan with his Red and White scarf and other regalia.
When he moved to Glaslough he became a member of the Glaslough Musical Society, playing his part in the annual Musical production and taking part in the National John Player Tops competition. He was always very musical and loved performing, but it was just not his voice but his dancing skills and ability to play comedy, which made him an all round artist. He was dearly loved by all members of the cast. His calming words, and his encouragement to all, prior to going on stage, settled many nerves and then his congratulations and genuine praise when each came off stage was always a great boost of confidence, especially to the newer members of the group.
There was always fun when Brendan was about and Master of Ceremonies was an easy task for him, irrespective of the occasion, and the photo above shows him in his element.
His great work for Monaghan Harps GFC in various capacities was immense and in his work in Iona House he gave 100% and was loved deeply. This short obituary could not do justice to the character that was Brendan McCann but suffice it to say - everyone who came in contact with him became instantly impressed with his sincerity and all will miss him terribly but as Fr. McGinn said - he is probably organising the social life in Heaven at this minute.
May he have eternal rest and peace.
