Monaghan Rose Selected

The Monaghan Rose for 2011 was selected at a function held in the Four Seasons Hotel, Monaghan, on Saturday night, April 23rd. The 15 girls entered for the competition, and sponsored by various businesses, were taken on a tour of the County the previous weekend but Saturday was a day of tense preparation and a last chance to impress the judges. The people with the responsibility for selecting the Monaghan representative to go forward to the regional final in Portlaoise was Lisa McClelland, Armagh Rose in 2007; Ciara McGlone, Tyrone Rose in 2007 and Gordon Weldron from Meath who was International Escort in 2007.

The compere on the night was Keith Walsh, radio presenter in i105-107, and he interviewed each girl on stage and thus gave the audience an indication of the girls’ personality, though the final decision was not based solely on her performance there.

Each girl had a crowd of supporters with banners and the winning banner was wishing good luck to Brenda Flynn. Also during the night a cheque for €2,600 was presented to Martin Cahill of the Cystic Fibrosis Association by the outgoing Monaghan Rose, Noelle Clerkin. This was raised by the girls for this very worthy cause. The Escort award went to Sean Woods, from Newbliss, and he will go to the International escort Bootcamp. The 2010 Monaghan Escort of the year, Eoin Treanor, spoke of his great experience in Tralee last year and how Texas became a desired destination for him.

Finally the big moment arrived and with the usual drum-roll Keith announced Caoimhe Daly as the 2011 Monaghan Rose. Caoimhe is daughter of Eamon and Leon Daly, Truagh, and was sponsored by the Wesstenra Hotel. She received her prizes, from chief organiser, Nicola Hackett, and from Noelle Clerkin. There was great excitement and plenty of photographs and congratulations all around and the night continued with dancing to Beetroot.
