Ambassador’s Visit to St. Macartan’s College.

Ambassador Binns arrived at St. Macartan;s and was greeted by Chairperson of Board of Management, Fr. McCaughey, and School Principal, Raymond McHugh. They had refreshments in the staffroom and met with some members of staff. Then the Ambassador was taken to the College Theatre, where Fifth Year students were gathered, and he was formally welcomed by the Principal. Mr. Binns then addressed the students and spoke of Canada and life there. He detailed the connection between his country and Ireland and Monaghan in particular. He went on to stress the contribution made by Irish people, many of whom were originally from Monaghan, to the development of Canada and the major role they played in the formation of Canadian history. He exhorted them to find their own talents as each individual has a talent, and to develop that talent as best they can.

There was a lively question/answer session then and students seemed very interested in life, education and work in Canada. A presentation was then made to the Ambassador before his departure from the College.
