CPR Training in Knockatallon.

On Saturday last CPR training took place in the Sliabh Beagh Hotel, Knockatallon. This was organised by representatives of Tydavnet Parish. Over the past few months, fundraising events were organised and the committee is now in a position to purchase 5 defibrillators and these will be placed in Tydavnet, Ballinode, Scotstown, Sliabh Beagh and Mullaghmore Equestrian Centre. The list of trained users will be published and freely available and this will all be in place in the very near future. Last Saturday was part of the process when many locals began their training as Defib Operators and these people will be on call in the case of an emergency. Joining them last Saturday were people from other areas - some beginning their training too and others upskilling and getting retesting. This is a vital part of the task as skills can be lost very quickly through lack of practice and regular training is necessary. In many areas reskilling must take place every three months.

Many areas in the country have already their Defibs in place and personnel trained. The need for this, especially in the case of rural areas, was emphasised recently with the sudden death of a visitors to the Knockatallon area. Rural areas can suffer ambulance delay and as minutes are vital in the event of a heart attack it is now necessary for this emergency service to be provided on a voluntary basis by locals. It is a very onerous responsibility and confidence in the use of the equipment and proper CPR and First Aid procedures are essential. In Knockatallon over 110 people took part in the training last weekend. Our photos show some of those participating.
