Back to Cornagilta School

Following the huge success of the Christmas Storytelling Night in Cornagilta Old School, Tydavnet Hidden Heritage Group held another evening of tales. This took place on Sunday 30th May at 5pm. There was music by the Marina Mohan School of Traditional Irish Music and Refreshments were served. The theme of the evening was ‘Hay & May’.  Many of the older generation, and the not so old, within the Parish came along and  shared their memories. One memory led to another and the stories were coming thick and fast. The little school room was packed to overflowing with excellent pupils who soaked up the atmosphere and made their own contribution. However the evening ended all too soon and many have more tales to tell. No doubt there will be another bell to call students and masters alike back to the old school room at Cornagilta,

This project is part financed by the European Union’s European Regional Development fund through the Peace III Programme and funded through Monaghan Peace III Partnership.

Here are some of our photos of the occasion.

Above is picture of some of the past pupils of Cornagilta who were present at the Story-telling on Sunday. On the right is Maureen Brady, Drumcoobrady, who began her schooling in Cornagilta when she was four years of age in 1934. Master Owens and Mrs Clerkin were the teachers and Master Murray then replaced Master Owens. He was a great man for the Irish and was a great musician. He played the bagpipes and there were few of those about. There were about 70 pupils at the school at that time and it was a tight squeeze to get them in. The children played hockey at lunch time and hide-and-seek. The trees around the school are taller now than then but the two big trees at the road had to be cut down. Maureen enjoyed this get-together and listening to the stories and the memories.
