In 2013 Kevin Bell, whose family come from Newry, was killed in a car accident in
New York. With great difficulty and huge expense the family repatriated Kevin's remains
back home for burial. Their experience of doing this at a time when they were so
vulnerable and in deep mourning gave them the idea of setting up a Trust in Kevin's
name to help other families who might find themselves in the same circumstances and
so began the Kevin Bell Repatriation Trust and to date it has assisted over 200 families.
The Mission Statement of the Trust states: The Kevin Bell Repatriation Trust aims
to alleviate the financial hardship of bereaved families repatriating the body (bodies)
of loved one(s) who have died abroad in sudden or tragic circumstances back to Ireland.
A number of families from County Monaghan have benefited from this excellent service
and recently assisted the McKenna family, Doogary. Peter McKenna, speaking at the
Quiz which he organised in the Redboys, Emyvale, to raise funds for the Trust, stated
that the Trust steps in when requested and Peter McMahon, Undertaker, working through
the Trust, was able to remove the worry and complexities, of taking a body back to
Ireland, from the family at such a difficult and sad time. The Quiz was packed to
the doors and the 37 teams taking part enjoyed the night. A lot of businesses and
individuals had donated great prizes for the Raffle prizes and all in all it was
a very successful event. We hope to bring you the total and the presentation of the
funds at a later date. Well done to Peter and his team of helpers and to the staff
of the Redboys, all of whom worked together to ensure its success, and also to all
who attended and supported the cause. Our photos show some of those who attended.
