Fun Run 2011
The Fun Run of 2011 broke previous records as the numbers of participants crossed
430. The weather was ideal, though cold for spectators, and the organisation of the
event was praised by participants. The first man home broke the time record too as
he finished the 10k in a few seconds over the 31 minute mark. Local contestants did
very well and secured some of the prizes but the real winners were the patients who
will benefit from the transport scheme organised to hospitals by the North Monaghan
Cancer Treatment Support Group. Many who availed of this service in the past were
participants and were delighted to be able to complete the course. Some participants
heard at first hand, and for the first time, how important this service has been
and were astonished at the work that is being done by the Support Group, which relies
totally on funds raised by various organisations and people round the area. Thanks
to the large number of participants this year, the Jolly Joggers will be in a position
to donate a sizeable sum to the Group. There was a large army of helpers who assisted
the Jolly Joggers with the organisation and running of the event and thanks must
go to them and in particular to Glaslough Harriers. The Joggers will issue a full
list of appreciation but everyone who helped will know that they performed a great
charitable act.
Clubs from many areas including Dublin, Belfast, Derry, Drogheda and
our neighbouring counties were represented and local people came out in mass to take
part. Some walked, some jogged, some ran but all had a great sense of achievement
when they crossed the finishing line. For some to finish the course was special to
them and brightened their lives. The event will help brighten the lives of many more
in the time ahead.
