This picture of Val Forde was taken shortly before his tragic death in a drowning
accident in Emy Lake in August 1964. Val was a top class footballer, as well
as a terrific person, and the Forde family presented the Forde Cup to the Emyvale
Club in his memory.
What are these boys up to?

on Bragan. As part of the Easter ceremonies for the Truagh and Donagh Parishes
Fr. Cathal Deery organised a prayer and reflection meeting on Bragan Mountain
on Easter Sunday morning, greeting the Rising of the Light. At 5.30a.m. on Sunday
250 parishioners gathered on the bleak mountain near the Penal Cross and although
the sun was hidden behind thick cloud the symbolism of the Resurrection and
the new Light was not lost on the congregation. The fact that the weather was
dry made the experience more pleasant but a very cold easterly wind forced everyone
to keep themselves well covered up. It was a moving experience and enjoyed by
all. Our photo shows Fr. Cathal with Maisie Rooney during the service.

Last
weekend there were a number of welcome visitors to Emyvale. They were Francis
and Paddy Callaghan and members of their families. In 1956 Jim Callaghan left
Emyvale for Dublin and from there, two years later, went to London and settled
there. His wife, Mary, had died in 1955, leaving him with two sons, Francis
and Paddy. Many locals will remember the Callaghan family and their thriving
Butchery business. Their home was the first house in the village at the Monaghan
end and the shop was situated in the centre of the village, where the Emyvale
Leisure Centre now stands. The shop was a great meeting place and many stories
can be told of those days. Two other Callaghan family members will also be remembered
- Sonny and Brigid. Brigid lived round the Drumully corner in a quaint little
house, which she kept immaculate. One of the lasting memories of Brigid will
be her terrific singing voice and her favourite song - ' When you were sweet
sixteen'. Indeed she was invited to sing for Radio Eireann but turned down the
offer. Brigid and Sonny also moved to London and both passed away within two
years of each other about six years ago. Francis and Paddy have called to the
area about three times over the years and call at the grave of their mother
in St. Patrick's cemetery, Corracrin. They have many relations on their mother's
side still living in the north Monaghan area and they are delighted to call
to see them. They also have a cousin in Caledon - Mary O'Connor, who is a daughter
of their aunt Peggy. As the boys were only aged five and four when they left
Emyvale in 1956 they have few memories of the village in those days. Francis
can remember falling into the river beside the house in Emyvale. Paddy can remember
the late Guard Gilmore in Emyvale and it was a great coincidence when he discovered
that his wife's sister-in-law was a niece of Guard Gilmore. They have established
closer contacts with Emyvale now and will be calling again soon and on a regular
basis. We enjoyed our time with them last Saturday.
Since we published this we have
had an email from a person who remembers Brigid from 1943 and the song he remembers
her singing - Lovely Derry on the Banks of the Foyle.

Lucy Sherwood from Hartlepoole,
England, (extreme right) is a constant visitor to the Emyvale site and, when
she came to visit Mick and Maisie Brady, we were delighted to meet her with
her son, Mike and her sister, Maureen Englishby. Lucy's family originates
from the Newtownbutler area of Fermanagh and it was there that she based herself
for this holiday. We hope they all enjoyed the trip and that they will call
again soon. We also send best wishes to another cousin of Lucy's - Richard
Tinneny.
